I am sort of new to air cooled engines and just about lost my engine when my belt broke. I hope I can get some suggestions.
When i took it in the mechanic suggested a new serpentine belt system that would hold up better. He said a new company has one out but didn't know the name of it, or anything about it. He just saw it in HOT VW's.
Does anyone know what the name of the company is and is it pretty good ?

There were over 21 million Beetles made with a standard Vee belt. IMO, the design is sound and doesn't need to be changed. Inspect your belt at regular intervals and you won't be left stranded. Carry a spare and the tools to change it.

Thanks for the information. I actually found the information on http://www.bmdpulleys.com/
I am sort od lazy and do not want to have to carry a belt and spare tools with me just in case. Especially on those rare occasions when my son borrows the car,
thanks again

Think he's still going to have to carry a Spare for that High $$ gimmick ?
Seems like all that is just an oversized belt with a tension adjusting pulley, other than the "Cool Factor 8) ", what are the real advantages of this type of Belt system?

Plus the replacement belt will probably cost more for that system?

I called BMD. I asked about the belt and price and I was told it is a standard Napa belt fo about 11 dollars. Easy to replace, but I was told I wouldn't need to. So if I do not have to worry about carrying a spare belt, someone told me that i do need to carry a fire extinguisher......and a cell phone...

Personally...I have never had a belt break...I check them out perodically, and dont use cheap POS Taiwan pulley's though (not implying you do, they are bad news though). As for "not needing to replace the belt" I find that claim highly dubious. There is no such thing as a part that doesnt wear out. All that is required to change the stock belt is a crecent wrench, and a largish screwdriver, and 5 mins or less. There, however, is nothing wrong with the serpentine belt if thast what you are interested in getting.

As for the fire extinguisher...I have always carried one in every car I have owned. Not because of any worry about my car, but rather that it certainly cant hurt to have one.
