Hi everyone....this is Michael from Leicester City in the UK. I'm retired now but my first car was a 1952 Beetle which I bought in Germany when I was with the RAF, in 1958, and 21 years of age !!! It had a Crash type gearbox, (no syncromesh in those days !!), but I soon got used to that. I am currently looking for a couple of photos to upload for all to see in the near future. I'm so pleased to have found this super site. Thank you.

SWhat a great welcome. Thank you. Yes, I have actually found an album with about three photos in it that I can put on in a couple of days. How busy we all still are, retired or not. The weather here has turned really cold. Some nice clear days but temps dropping at night. Of course we all have colds at this time of the year and we Seniors now get a yearly Flu jab which is supossed to help keep us going for a bit longer (rather like some of the beetles still do !!). The Summer was not too bad here this past year but I was able to get over to Spain a couple of times for some real sun. Spain is about a 2 hour flight, apart from all the waiting at the airports of course. Yes, I often remember my days in the RAF, particularly as a single guy because I seemed to have so much more time to mess about with my new love, which was the Dark Brown !!! Beetle which I soon changed to bright Red. I never saw another Red VW at that time as most cars were either Black or maybe Gray. Colours were coming in though but mainly the darker shades to begin with. Well, thank you again for the welcome. See you in a couple of days. Is'nt it so nice to chat to people from all over ??

No, just looking around. Glad to have found the site tho as plenty of interesting stuff going on. In the 50's you could feel the determined will of folk in Germany.... recovering from the past and just wanting to get back to being a major country. Everyone was in a hurry, making up for time lost. I was there for 3 years. Made many friends too. Could'nt wait to get a Beetle. Thought they were super. Started to get a bit more refined from 1952 onwards. A bit more plush etc. I test-drove a 1959 on our base and was quite amazed at the difference the large ?? rear window made, after having driven my Split around. Could'nt afford a new one tho - even if the price new was around £400 basic (maybe $660 ?? ) . Happy days.
