I need help on a project

I need help on my VW-based sand-rail. I bought it used from my landlord, because I wanted a project. It is picky about starting (it only starts when it "feels like it"), and when I drive it, or attempt to, I have to clutch after driving about 2 meters. I'd like someone to give me some helpful tips to get my buggy up and running like when it was built all the way back in 1984. Thank you! 8)

Hi there! Welcome to TheGoldenBug.com Forums

There are so many things that could be wrong... Begin with the basics: check your air & gas filters (elements), gas lines, hoses and gas pump... Stage No.2 are distributor, spark plugs (cleaning w. clearance adjustment) & carburetor...

The worst possible scenario is that your engine is ready for an overhaul - check your compression and you'll find out...

Can you be more specific?

Thank you. I suppose I was kind of unspecific. Sorry. See, when I drive it, it dies after very long. Clearly it has some power problem because the engine completely stops dead. I have replaced the fuel filter and fuel hose, aswell as rebuilding the carburetor, replacing the spark plugs with pre-gapped Bosch Platinum plugs that were allready set to the right gapping. I also rebuilt the starter, which went bad after I drove the car once afterwards. Then I bought a new starter from Auto-Zone. I have only been able to drive my Dune-Buggy about 6-7 Kilometers since I bought it in September of 2003. I have not yet replaced the Air filter, or have adjusted the timing or have done anything with the distributor. I have tried to check the compression, but I have no one to hold the tester down while I crank the engine over. I'm sooooo glad you can help me, as you would obviously know. You are allready a great help.

Well, you already answered your question! Double-check all those things that you listed above (air supply, timing/distributor etc)...

You wouldn't believe, but almost always the biggest troublemakers are those little things that we overlook so easily...

Well, since my last reply, I have gone to the Wall-Mart and have picked up a 4-cylinder formula can of "Restore", which you add to your oil, and then it is supposed to restore power and compression to a very satisfying level. It probably isn't going to cause some miracle to come over the car, but I can hope it will help a little.
I do live in the US, In the state of Indiana, near the city of Indianapolis. I don't have photos developed yet, but I can assure you when I get some done, you will see some. Thanks for all of your help. I don't know many VW experts, except for the helpful guys at AutoHaus Merkle in Indianaoplis.

Well, I took a compression test, and it was pretty bad news. I need to tear down the engine and replace the rings, valves, or maybe even a head. Also, I found that the timing was WAY too far in advance, so since I didn't have a timing light at the time, I had a friend crank over the engine while I turned the distributor. After about 3 inches of turning, the engine sputtered to life. I ordered a ring set online, which should come anytime from Sunday to Wednesday. I'm hoping that the ring replacement will make the car run as good as when it was built.
